After independence till 1949, the electricity generation was only 13.27 MW but with the formation of Rajasthan State Electricity Board (RSEB) 1957 power sector gained momentum. Gradually installation capacity, transmission network and electrification grew.
Rajasthan State Electricity Board is furthered into Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd., Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd. and the three regional distribution companies namely Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd., Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. and Jodhpur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd.is responsible for power generation and Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd. is the division looking after transmission.
At present the installed electricity generation capability is 4,547 MW. About 72 per cent of Rajasthan’s electricity generation capacity is based on thermal power or energy.
The electricity consumption in Rajasthan is 334 kWh per annum and the consumption is increasing annually at the rate of 11%.
These days when everything is going mechanical, the demand for electricity is growing to run these machines. Rajasthan is falling short of supply against the demand but it is expected that the power scenario of the State will soon improve in upcoming years.
Non conventional sources of energy like gas, lignite, solar or thermal, water and wind are used extensively in Rajasthan.
Projects Under implementation- Ramgarh gas power project
- Suratgarh thermal power project
- Kota thermal power station
- Girna lignite thermal project
- Dholpur gas power project
Solar Energy in RajasthanRajasthan is a desert land. The climate here is very hot so it is good site for producing electricity from sun.
India Meteorological Department, the highest annual global radiation received in Rajasthan ranges between 6-6.4 Kwh/m2/day making it suitable for large solar energy power stations.
Rajasthan Government Initiatives and Incentives
The Government of Rajasthan supports development of both solar thermal and solar photovoltaics (SPV) power generation.
In Rajasthan, the State Government is planning to establish a Solar Energy Enterprises Zone (SEEZ) in Barmer, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur districts and is offering incentives to private investors who wish to establish solar power plants there.
The huge fossil fuel/solar hybrid power is poised to generate 140 megawatts of electric power. The running cost of the project would come to about $1 million per megawatt which is quite cheaper.
Wind EnergyThe hot weather and strong winds make Rajasthan a suitable and important destination for wind power generation. Till the end of 2007 total 496 mw energy was produced by wind. Now the state is among one of the leading producers of wind power in India, with an installation of 645 MW wind power plant. The state’s capacity has been estimated to generate 5,400 megawatts energy. The wind-energy projects are running in Jaisalmer, Barmer, Devgarh, Harshnath, Phalodi and Phalodi.
