Sikar

Introduction: Located in the north-western part of Rajasthan, Sikar is one of the famous district of Shekhawati region. With an area of 7742 square kms, geographically the district lies at Longitude 74'440 to 75' 250  and  Latitude East 27' 210 to 28'120 North.

The district is covered  by Jhunjhunu District in north, in the north-west by Churu district, in the south-west by Nagaur district and in the south-east by Jaipur district. It also touches Mahendragarh district of Haryana on its north-east corner.

The district is famous for few world known temples where every year thousands of devotees come to pay their prayers and get blessed by the God.

History: Surrounded by the high walls comprising seven gates, constructed to protect the district, Sikar is one of the famous city of Shekhawati region. The traditional name of Sikar was Beer Bhan Ka Bass’. With an objective of bringing down the seeds of enemy  which developed due to murder of Jaswant Singh, the district was gifted to his son Daulat Singh,  by Bahadur Singh the raja of Khandela, who was the king of province. Thus, the foundation of corner stone was laid  by Daulat Singh and later his son Shiv Singh, who himself was a brave and courageous ruler made a fort of excellence. Shiv Singh was the person of religious nature and is regarded as one of the strongest rulers of the district of his time.

Tourist Destination: Sikar is mostly famous for its world known temples, where devotees from every corner of world visit the place. Following are the worth visiting places of the district.

Khattu Shyamji: Located 65 kms from Sikar and 80 kms from Jaipur, the place is famous for the temple of Khatti Shyamji dedicated to Lord Krishna. According to an ancient tale at the time of Mahabhart war, Barbareek, the son of famous Pandav Bhim and a snake princess wished to see the war of Mahabhart with lord Krishna. Barbareek was blessed with three Bows (arrows) which were given to him by Lord Shiva to conquer the three worlds when he pleased lord Shiva by his fighting skills. While giving these bows to Barbareek, Lord Shiva had instructed him to use these bows to help the weaker section in war and as the Kaurav’s were proving to be weaker then Pandavas, and if Barbareek fight against them their defeat was confirmed. So lord Krishna asked Barbareek to donate  his head as charity to Lord Krishna, keeping his promise Barbareek gave his head  and became the donator of head also known as Sheesh ka Dani by local people. With this he wished to watch the battle.

Later his head was buried in Khattu, once the ruler of Khattu had a dream in which he was asked to construct a temple dedicating to lord Krishna. Till date it is believed that every one who takes the name of Khattu Shymaji with full devotion his wish comes true.

Ganeshwar:  15 km. away from Neem ka Thana and 80 km. from Sikar via Udaipurwati Ganeshwar is the place of pilgrimage as well as a famous Picnic spot. The hot sulphur springs is the major attraction of the place. A dip in the springis  believed to cures skin diseases. It is an ancient site. The historic records reveals that the place is 4000 years old.
Jeen Mata:  30 Km. away from Sikar. is an ancient Temple dedicated to Jeen Mata ( Goddess of Power) . It is believed that the  temple was built thousand years ago. Every year thousands of devotees pay their tribute in the month of CHAITRA & ASHWIN at the time of NAVARATRA fairs.

Harshnath Temple: 14 km. away from SIKAR this temple is famous for the Shiva Temple of 10th  century  located on the hills of Aravali. The temple has an eye catching architecture.
