Rajsamand

Introduction: Rajsamand emerged as a separate district on April 10th, 1991, by separating the portion of erstwhile  Udaipur district. The district is given name on the name of famous lake ‘Rajsamand’ built by Maharana Raj Singh.

Located between latitudes 24o 46'  to 26o 01'  North and Longitudes 73o 28'  to 74o 18'  East. The  district is bordered by Ajmer in North, Pali in West, Udaipur in South and  Bhilwara in East.

History: The history of Rajsamand has its own historical importance. The history dates back to 17th century when Rana Raj Singh Mewar constructed an artificial lake Rajsamand in 1622 A.D, which is magnificent illustration of the then architecture and public works.

Besides this Rajsamand has witnessed the first war of Indian Independence in 1857 under the auspice of Tantya Tope and British rule. The place is known for Kubhalgarh,the birth place of Maharana Pratap, the famous battle place of Haldighati, the temple of Shrinathji who is the chief deity of vaishnav community, and the temples of Dwarkadheesh, Charbhuja.

Rajsamand is famous as one of the largest marble producing district of the state.

Tourist Destinations: Being the portion of Mewar region and erstwhile Udaipur, the district of Rajsamand is blessed with some beautiful destinations fascinating tourists from all over the country and world.

KumbhalGarh: The place is known as the birth place of Maharana Pratap, Kumbhalgarh is the second important fort of Mewar region after Chittorgarh. The place is surrounded by aravalli range of mountains. Built by Rana Kumbha the way to the fort is serpentine. The long thick wall of the fort is the second largest wall after the Great Wall of China.

 Haldi Ghati(The Yellow Vale):  The place is famous for the war between Mahrana Pratap and Mughal ruler Akbar in 1576. Due to yellow colour of soil (similar to turmeric) the place is called as Haldi Ghati (Yellow ValleY).  In his famous book 'Anals and Antiquities of Rajputana' famous British author Col. James Todd explains Haldighati as “Thermopile of Mewar”.

Chetak Tomb: The famous old saying “Animals are more honest than man” proved to be true, when the horse Chetak the favourite horse of Maharana Pratap sacrificed his life for his master in the famous war of Haldi Ghati. During the war Chetak carried out his injured and wounded master Mahrarana Pratap from the battle field to the safer place. The tomb is located 2 kms away to the west of Haldi Ghati.

Rakam Garh: Located 10 kms away in south east of Rajsamand, the fort witnesses first fight of independence the Revolt of 1857, when Tantya Tope directed his against the British rule from this fort. It is believed that for a short tenure Tantya Tope stayed here and was assisted by the then rulers of Kotharia and Tilkayat of Shrinathji. style="font-weight: normal;">

Machind: Located in the aravali range of mountain adjacent to the Jarga range of mountain has its own historical importance. It is believed that Maharana Pratap and his son Amar Singh stayed here for a short period. The place is named after Guru Matsyendra Nath of nath community who prayed here in a cave. Machind is also recognized as the birth place of Maharana Pratap Singh.
