Karuali

Introduction: Karauli district derived its name from the ancient town Karauli which has a wealth of history and a magnificent palace built in 1635. It is bordered by Dholpur District to the east; by Bharatpur District to the north-east; by Dausa District to the north; and by Sawai Madhopur District to the west. The entire district is covered by hills and ravines, there are no lofty peaks, the highest having an elevation of less than 1400 feet above sea-level. The district has traces of good grade stone and some iron ores adding to the mineral wealth of the state.

History: History of Karauli district state’s that the old karuali state  felt under the boundaries of Hindaun and Gangapur cities of princely state of Jaipur. The credit of developing this area of Daang, which was a deep forest, goes to the initiative of yadau rulers. With the formation of Rajasthan in 1949 it became a part of the then Matsaya Union under Jaipur district. On March 1, 1997, the then government of Rajasthan separated five tehsils from the district of Sawai Madhopur and declared Karuali as a separate district of its administration. One of the biggest river of the state Chambal river separates the district from the borders of Muraina city of Madhya Pradesh.

The old forts located in the district speaks the story of its glory. The major forts are Timangarh, Uantgiri and Mandrayal.  The fort of Timangarh had  been under the dominance of Yadav rulers.

Tourist Destinations: The major tourist destinations in the district are Timagarh, Kela Devi Wild Life Sanctuary, Shri Mahavirji Temple, Madan Mohan Ji temple and Mehandipur Balaji.

Karauli is situated only 64 Kms from Mahuwa, midway on the Jaipur-Agra Highway. It is 182 Kms from the famous Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur and 110 kms from Gwalior.
