Introduction:
The district head quarter of Ajmer district is an oasis wrapped in the green hills.Ajmer occupies a sacred position in the hearts of both Muslims and Hindus and is famous pilgrimage of Muslims due to famous mosque of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti known as Dargah Shariff Tomb, every year thousands of Muslims visit Ajmer during the month of URS, the holy month according to muslim community which appears according to lunar calendar.

Ajmer is also known for renowned education institutions established during British control, the Mayo College and St. Angela Sophia School occupy a prestigious position in the field of education.

Location:

Ajmer is one of the 33 administrative districts of Rajasthan, situated in the central part of the state and is surrounded by Jaipur and Tonk districts in the east and Pali in the west. Nagaur district touches its north boundaries while Bhilwara district is in the south.


History:
The history of Ajmer dates back to 7th A.D. century when Chauhan ruler Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan invaded Ajmer and since then Ajmer became the political center for Chauhan rulers till 1193, as at that time the then Chauhan ruler Prithvi Raj Chauhan lost a war against mughal ruler Mohammed Gauri. After that Ajmer witnessed the control of many rulers. In the beginning Ajay Pal constructed a fort for him at the hills of city and called it "Ajaimeur" or the " Invincible Hill ".

Ajmer had attracted the mughal rulers from the very beginning. The first meeting of mughal empire Jahangir and Sir Thomas Roe took place here in 1616. During 1818 scindias captured the control of Ajmer and during British ruler transferred the administration of Ajmer in hands of British ruler and since then Ajmer became the part of Rajasthan under the control of East India Company.

Travel Attractions in and around Ajmer:
Ajmer is surrounded by various famous tourist places which mark their presence in world map. Pushkar which is almost eleven kilometers away from Ajmer, is one of the holistic place for Hindus, it is said that one who visits Pushkar once in life time the gates of heaven are open for him.

Pushkar is well known for the world fame Brahama Temple which is only the temple of lord Brahama in world. Every year Pushkar fair is organized in the month of December when number of tourists from Indian and foreign come to this holy place. 

Another important place near Ajmer that fascinates tourists towards itself is Kishangarh which is 27 kms away from Ajmer. Founded  by rajput ruler Kishan Singh is famous for its fine arts. The paintings of Bani Thani of Kishangarh are recognized throughout world. Tilonia is also one of the famous visiting place near Ajmer located 25 kms away from Ajmer is mostly famous for its leather work.

Other worth visiting places while visiting Ajmer district are Ana Sagar, Nasiyan (Red) Jain Temple, Adhai-din-ka-Jhompara, Daragh of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, Ana Sagar Lake and Daulat Bagh Lake. Explore More.
