Rajasthan is the place of rare combination where music of bravery and love flows in the air, spicy taste is found in food and knots in a pagari attracts the attention of every one this blend makes Rajasthan distinctive from other states of India. The clothes and jewelery are not only the items to wear and put, but they represent their region, economic and social status also. The dresses they wear designed to suit the climatic conditions where they live.
Men’s Costume: It is said that your dress represents your personality. This is true while discussing the attires of men’s in Rajasthan. Mostly the Rajasthani men’s wear pagadi or turban, angrakha and dhoti’s, when an unknown person see these clothes he cannot make any distinction in them. But, a person belonging from Rajasthan can easily identify that from where the other person belongs.
The tying of up turban, its colour and its style represents the specific regions of Rajasthan. A person belonging from Udaipur region wear a flat
pagari, whereas
Jaipuri pagaris are angular while
Jodhpuri safa marks its own identity by having slightly curved bands.
Angrakha also known as body protector is made of cotton. Generally two types of
Angrakha prevail in the state. One is a frock style and has length upto waist, the other style of
angrakha reaches below the knees. The
angrakha is used to cover the upper portion of body.
Whereas
Dhoti’s or pyjamas are used to cover the lower portion of body. To wear a dhoti is not an easy task as it requires good practice to tie it. People belonging from rich families use to wear
‘patka’ in place of pagadi.
Women’s Costume: “Ghagara” or a long skirt upto the length of knee is the common dress of Rajasthani women. The length of skirt is kept high to make visible the feet ornaments. The most attractive feature of
Ghagara is its spread like umbrella at the bottom. The pleats in ghagara indicates the prosperity.
Choli’s are the top wear above the skirts or ghagara. Rajasthani ladies put a piece of cloth having the length upto two to three meters on their heads, it is known as
‘Odhani’ it works as cover or curtain for women. It is generally put to give respect to the elders of family.
Footwear: Rajasthani
‘Mojaris’ have their own recognition in world. It is wear by both man and women. Made by camel leather are soft from inside and can also be put inside the home. Where as the shoes or mojaris made by the leather of sheep or goat are strong and are put outside the home. The
mojaris are designed and decorated with embroidery work done on their velvet.
